L/M:Solving Words- I notice new and interesting words. L/M:Solving Words- I use many different strategies to figure out new words quickly while thinking about the meaning L/M:Solving Words- I use context clues to figure out tricky words. L/M:Solving Words- I use the graphics to figure out content specific words. L/M:Predicting-I use what I know and what I’ve learned to make predictions about the text (cause/effect, problem/solution, compare/contrast) L/M:Predicting- I can make a prediction and tell you why I made the prediction. (I can give you evidence.) L/M:Predicting- I can tell whether my prediction was right or not. Why? L/M:Monitoring and Correcting- I self correct when it doesn’t make sense or doesn’t sound right L/M:Monitoring and Correcting- If it doesn’t make sense, I stop and think. I don’t move ahead until I understand it. Making Connections- I can explain the type of connection I am making (topic, content, type of story) L/M:Making Connections- I make connections to other books, to myself, and what I know about the world before, during, and after reading L/M:Making Connections- Using my own personal experiences, I can connect to what the character says and does. (How does your life connect to the character’s dialogue and actions? L/M:Searching for and Using Information- I use chapter titles to foreshadow content. (Look at titles of each chapter. What do you think is going to happen in the text?) L/M:Searching for and Using Information- I use the illustrations to help me understand what I am reading. (How do the illustrations to help you understand what you are reading?) L/M:Synthesizing- I can use a KWL to determine what I already know and what I am learning. L/M:Synthesizing- I talk about how my ideas have changed as the text unfolds L/M:Synthesizing- I can explain different characters’ points of view L/M:Synthesizing- I understand the relationship between the setting and the plot. L/M:Summarizing-I can summarize the main events in the order they happened. (Retell the key events of the plot in order). L/M:Summarizing- I stop at points throughout a book to summarize L/M:Summarizing- I can explain the problem and resolution. (Explain problem and resolution?) Inferring- The dialogue helps me to figure out how the character is feeling. L/M:Inferring- I can explain changes in characters over time and talk about possible reasons for the change. L/M:Inferring- I can explain the central idea or theme of a text (What was the theme (the lesson or moral) of the text? How did you know?) L/M:Inferring- I can infer causes of problems or of outcomes L/M:Maintaining Fluency- I read smoothly with phrasing and only self-correct for meaning L/M:Maintaining Fluency- I read as if I were the character L/M:Maintaining Fluency- I read the way I talk unless I get to a word that I don’t know, and then I slow down to figure out the word L/M:Analyzing- I notice words in bold print, larger font, or italics. L/M:Analyzing- I notice how the illustrations add to the story L/M:Analyzing- I can explain how figurative and descriptive language adds to understanding or enjoyment. (Identify an example of figurative language (ex. simile, metaphor). How did this add to the story?) L/M:Analyzing- I can talk about the author’s style. L/M:Analyzing- can tell you exactly where the problem is solved in the story. L/M:Adjusting- When something is tricky, I slow down. After I understand it, I read at a normal rate. L/M:Adjusting- I read nonfiction books in a different way than I read fiction books L/M:Critiquing- I can talk about the book and give my opinion about what is happening and give you evidence to support my thinking.
